A Luxury Spa Day in Canary Wharf, London

Once upon a time there was a freezing cold day in London

“Once” – yeah right.. it’s always freaking cold at the moment and last week it seemed even colder than usual!

As you can tell I’m starting to crave a little bit of warmth.

Enter the East River Spa at The Radisson Edwardian Canary Wharf. It might not be the sunny sandy beach I’m craving right now, but it comes a close second with its warm ceramic sunbeds, crystal steam room, it’s candle lit relaxing treatment rooms all complete with a super hot sauna.

Hosted by SpaSeekers to celebrate female empowerment and self-love I was part of a group with seven other lovely blogger ladies all brought together to remind ourselves that the most important person you can take care of in life…is you!

With Valentines Day about to arrive it doesn’t matter if you’re in a relationship, single or something ‘complicated’, ultimately we only get one body to look after and every so often it needs deserves a special time out and a pamper. Who’s with me?

Where?

The Radisson Edwardian Canary Wharf, just as the name suggests, resides a leisurely 15 minute walk from Canary Wharf tube station.

I left the hustle and bustle of rush hour far behind me and strolled along past the iconic, ever so slightly intimidating sky-scrapers, towards my destination by the Thames. The sun had begun to shine and my day was already taking a turn for the better.

What first?

After wandering through the large open bright hotel lobby, catching the lift up to the 1st floor where the spa is hosted all to its lovely self, I quickly changed into some comfortable clothes and took a Yoga class with Alec Vishal Rouben in a room with a view of the Thames gazing out over to the O2.

One thing I’ve learnt when going to a spa day; start with a yoga class! After all that rush-hour train and tube pandemonium I was a tad frazzled.  A yoga class quickly eradicates any stress, puts you in the perfect mindset and reminds you that all crap bothering you in the morning really does not matter.

Suitably stretched, relaxed and feeling pretty content we learnt lots of new moves and in particular how each pose can be something different for everyone and that lots of little tricks about how to improve our posture, which way our fingers should point, elbows to be inverted and knees to be raised.

I’ve taken quite a few yoga classes over the years but Alec is a true Yogi and really knew his stuff. It wouldn’t be right to not tell you about his podcast which he was so clearly proud of and eager to share. Listen here and let me know what you think as I’ve not yet had the chance to tune in.

Afternoon Tea Time

My most favourite part of the day was up next – treat time!

Cucumber sandwiches, scones with jam and thick rich heavy cream, pink treats where I’m sure the names are far too fancy for me to remember, fresh fruit, gluten free cookies (for those with allergies) salmon if that’s your thing and lots of delicious fruit juice, tea and coffee. The portions were huge and just when you think you’ve had enough…out comes more!

One thing was for sure, we weren’t going to be hungry! This spa really knows how to create a lavish feast!

Massage Time

In the afternoon I was led by the loveliest of therapists into one of the many treatments rooms and asked to smell three beautiful fragrant massage oils. I’m always drawn to things that smell of cinnamon with a slight spicy edge so oil number 1 was perfect.

Usually in spas the treatment rooms are quite compact but the rooms here were bigger than usual meaning you didn’t feel quite so claustrophobic. All equipped with candles (standard), showers, piles of soft fluffy towels, and a sleepy tune playing quietly in the background I was ready for my muscles to melt and for my mind to totally relax.

Mission accomplished, I didn’t want to get up and was very tempted to book in for another immediately. Instead I sleepily headed to the iconic panoramic relaxation room, took my perch on one of the ceramic hot beds and gazed out of the window until I’d mustered up enough energy to get myself dressed and head home.

As I left the hotel I walked along the river and slowly retraced my steps back to the tube, slowly reintroducing myself to London life but this time with far more energy and calmness than when I arrived.

And… I’m getting all serious now, but did you know that but certain hormones are released during a massage which in turn increases your serotonin levels – ultimately making you feel happier. Some research even says that massages have such a positive effect on your mental health, that they can help with depression. It explains a lot really.

I’m also a firm believer that if we feel good about ourselves then our confidence and our well-being will improve too.

SpaSeekers have also written a quick little post which includes tips on how to take care of yourself a little more, you can read it here.

I SO need a spa day. This looks so relaxing, and – as an American – I love that it included tea. So fun!! 🙂
