“We’re going to do it aren’t we….” said my boyfriend as we both looked down at the last four crisps in the giant box in front of us. “Yes, Steve… we’re totally greedy, did you forget about that?” On that note, get ready to have your mouths watering as I show you lots of delicious photos about one of the the coolest places to get the best snacks in Soho, London. You can thank me later 😉
I’m actually talking about our recent trip to HipChips in Soho, which we visited last Sunday when it was freakin roasting! Soho, actually London itself, unless you’re on some fancy rooftop or pretty park somewhere can be a bit of a nightmare in the heat. It’s a little bit stinkier than usual, people can be extra ratty… it’s acting like most of us are acting right now in the heat. Exhausted.
I feel a bit crap moaning about the too hot weather, the last thing I want is for it to be pouring down with rain. But, it’s not fair. We don’t have swimming pools or air-conditioned homes; our tube system is bloody awful, and you’ll sweat in places you didn’t know was even possible.
But, off we went and braved it anyway, all in the need to try some delicious new crisps!
I can’t hide the fact I have a super sweet tooth, that’s pretty obvious right? But, every now and again, I crave savoury BAD. Like, need a bag of crisps this very moment bad. And one single tiny bag isn’t going to cut it either. I need a good portion that I can munch on, with dips or without, salty, spicy, extra crispy…and I love them all. I like to eat so many crisps the salt starts to make my lips tingle a little! And I usually don’t like to share, sorry.
I’m not really.
I’ll share these, but quite clearly these are made to be shared. They’re what I call social crisps. Is that a thing? I dunno… but I’m going to use it. I’m copy-writing it, it’s mine.
Back to being selfish again, I don’t share my food easily see! But I am learning.
I’ve also totally side-tracked. I think I’m giddy writing this. It could be a combination of memories of me eating the freshly baked multi-coloured crisps and heat exhaustion. Either way, I’m rolling with it.
Soho. It’s a random part of London isn’t it? And one of London’s most culturally diverse areas. Famed for massage parlours and its risqué vibe you’ll find many strip bars, gay and lesbian bars and many a burlesque show. But then look across the road and they’ll be a record shop, or a bakery. Even a pretty little florist.
It’s where all sorts of different people mix together, and I love it.
Every time I go I see things I’ve never noticed before. It’s such a small part of London but even exploring in a day you don’t get to see even half of it, plus it’s constantly evolving.
It’s an area which has an incredible music history, is home to many historical figures, including Mozart, Karl Marx and The Sex Pistols, and it’s a favourite with media types. When friends from York come to me asking where in London they should visit I always say Soho.
There’s no pretending you’re something you’re not, no shying away from the pretentious shops because you’re not dressed right. Anything goes in Soho, and that’s the best thing about it.
If you’ve never been you need to get down there the next chance you have. Explore the best of Soho by wandering its exciting streets, find a window seat for some unbeatable people watching at a pavement cafe and soak up the neighbourhood’s unique vibes.
HipChips has window seats. It also has cosy booths at the back.
It’s bright, funky and settles itself in perfectly in Soho. I couldn’t imagine it in any other part of London.
The dips are imaginative, punchy, and fashionable, it’s most definitely hipster, and pretty damn delicious too.
I will be going back for more, especially to try the sweet version. I mean come on, sugared freshly baked crisps with a chocolate sauce – I was tempted to dip my toes in the sweet variety when I visited, but couldn’t resist the trusty savoury ones.
Picking up a pack at the shop is never going to satisfy my crisp craving in the same way.
It’s just another good excuse to go back. On a cooler day maybe.
You’ll never feel quite the same way about crisps again!
Oh, and if you’re the ‘couch-potato’ type… get them delivered or grab a box to take out with you.
